Webinar: How the lithium rush is producing sacrifice zones in Europe and beyond

5 Mar 2025

Key to renewable energy technologies, but also IT, construction and military equipment, are so-called ‘critical’ raw minerals, such as lithium. Current climate and energy policies are increasing their demand globally, thus leading to new forms of extractivism. This mineral rush raises challenges and questions about the socio-environmental impacts of (EU) policies, such as the Critical Raw Materials Act. During this webinar, we explore the global and local dimensions of lithium mining, who benefits and who is left behind. We will zoom in on GreenPaths’ case studies, focusing on their social, environmental and economic impacts. Researchers from Portugal, Serbia and Chile will share with us key insights and their views on (green) extractivism in (potential) sacrifice zones

The webinar  “How the Lithium Rush is Producing Sacrifice Zones in Europe and Beyond” features a wide range of expert speakers who will focus on examples of lithium mining and new extractivism projects in Northern Portugal, Serbia and Chile.
