GreenPaths consortium joins ELUS inaugural conference in Prague to explore Just Green Transitions

20 Oct 2025

On 27 September 2025, the GreenPaths consortium participated in the inaugural conference of ELUS in Prague, contributing to a vital conversation on one of the most pressing challenges of our time:

What makes a green transition also a just one?

As part of the panel titled “Green and Just Transition Pathways in Europe”, GreenPaths members shared diverse perspectives and case studies from across Europe and beyond, highlighting the complex interplay between environmental sustainability and social justice.

Key contributions included:

  • Yannick van den Berg, Candida Leone, and Aleksa Radonjić (UVA) discussed energy justice and the EU Hydrogen Economy, drawing on experiences from the Netherlands and Morocco.
  • Marcus Erridge (CES)  examined the legal dimensions of lithium mining in Barroso, Portugal.
  • Irina Velicu (CES) addressed conservation and justice issues in the Carpathian region.
  • Vedran Horvat (IPE) presented insights on sustainable tourism transitions in Croatia.
  • Christina Eckes (UVA) reflected on the evolving role of EU law and policy in shaping fair transitions through various case studies.

The session explored how EU legislation and policy influence green and just transitions across different local contexts, acting both as a catalyst and a constraint. It also emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary and cross-border collaboration in driving meaningful and inclusive change.

GreenPaths is grateful to ELUS for providing a platform to engage in this critical dialogue and to all partners for their valuable contributions.
